Why breed domestic rats?

breeding domestic rats

You wonder why I chose to breed rats? The answer is quite simple. For me, the choice to breed rats  came about the day I realized that the rat is the pet par excellence which, in addition to being endearing and hyper-intelligent, could take on a captivating beauty with its color and various physical characteristics.

Rat breeding and pet therapy

I wondered if it was possible to make people aware of the kindness of rats and the fact that this question found an answer in me which is obvious, motivated me more than ever to take up this major challenge which is to break all the prejudices that people have against these little balls of fur filled with love and overflowing with joy. First of all, it was this primary motivation that proved powerful enough to make me want to introduce people to the healthy and therapeutic side of rats. It may seem surprising to say so, nevertheless it is the strict truth. Rats turn out to be real little therapists and they know how to channel what is wrong with a person to free them from these discomforts or injuries.

The rat establishes a deep connection with its mistress or its master, for my part I prefer to say its human, and it scans what is wrong to operate a cure. Rats are worth letting them into your life because they are a bond you can’t miss. As I always say:

A life isn’t complete until you’ve had the experience of having a relationship with a rat.

For this reason, I said to myself that it was worth investing myself in this new challenge, which is to introduce visitors to the Rat Breeding website to each  rat to be adopted  within the Chimère rattery and that they leave convinced to adopt at least two even if I still hope to see my adopted baby rats leave as a trio rather than a duo because two rats living together is good but three rats interacting with each other, c is even better.

It is therefore in a therapeutic approach that I approach the breeding of rats and to achieve my objectives I cannot miss the reproduction of rats to establish certain lines of rats which embody the perfect pet by its character. , her beauty and her health. The rat has suffered so much stigma that still makes life hard for them even today in 2021, that the beauty of the animal must be at the rendezvous, the same for its behavior and its health which must be exemplary. since rats have a very bad reputation. One of my goals is to educate the general public about the differences between the domestic rat and the wild rat.

All the difference of the domestic rat lies in the fact that it is precisely not a wild rat. The domestic rat is genetically different. It has been domesticated for decades, which has profoundly transformed it. In exchange for your love, your attention and your good care, a rat from my rattery will give you his heart and his loyalty for life. The rats that are offered for adoption in my rattery are selected first for their good character and second for their beauty and third for their health.

Rats that have been treated well by humans will pass on their bond of trust in humans to their offspring, which is why you can expect to adopt raccoons that already trust humans if you opt for 2 or 3 raccoons. who were born in my  rattery  Chimera because not only do I socialize each raccoon from their first days of life but I surround their mother and father with love. By the same token, a rat which carries its young while being in trust with its human, will  transmit its energies  to its offspring during its gestation and at the time of giving birth, the little baby rats which have received this  imprint  from their mother are welcomed in a zen atmosphere where trust reigns.
I therefore approach the breeding of rats from a perspective based on the environmental factors that can influence the biology of the rat more rapidly through “epigenetic” modifications. These alter the expression of genes, but not their actual nucleotide sequence.

I quote to you a passage translated into French from the article entitled  Scary memories haunt the descendants of mice :

Ressler and his colleague Brian Dias therefore chose to study epigenetic inheritance in laboratory mice trained to fear the smell of acetophenone, a chemical whose smell has been compared to that of cherries and almonds. He and Dias spread the scent around a small bedroom, while giving small electric shocks to male mice. The animals eventually learned to associate the smell with pain, shivering in the presence of acetophenone even without shock.

This reaction was passed on to their babies, Dias and Ressler report today in  Nature Neuroscience  1  . Although never encountered acetophenone in their lifetime, the offspring showed heightened sensitivity when introduced to its scent, shivering more noticeably in its presence than the offspring of mice that had been conditioned. to be frightened by a different smell or who had not experienced such a smell.

Conditioning

A third generation of mice — the “grandchildren” — also inherited this reaction, as did mice conceived by  in vitro fertilization  with semen from acetophenone-sensitized males. Similar experiments have shown that the response can also be transmitted from the mother.

Baby rats for adoption

As mentioned previously, the baby rats to be adopted within the Chimère rattery which is located in Quebec, in Chaudière Appalaches, are all pampered and surrounded by love, socialized from their first days of life, and I can tell you that makes all the difference in their contact with humans because as far back as they remember their first interaction with a human, they have the memory of a reassuring love relationship that was transmitted to them as soon as they been manipulated by the human hand. By adopting from La ratterie Chimère, you are sure to adopt a baby rat (raccoon) who loves humans.

Livestock farm and pet store

This is the exact opposite of what happens on a breeding farm where mother rats transmit to their raccoons the fear of humans and with good reason since the rats are raised in inhumane conditions. It is therefore these raccoons that end up in pet stores. If you adopt a pet rat from a pet store, you find yourself bringing home a stressed animal that has been treated like a commodity, a commodity just to be sold for monetary profit. The care the rats receive on a breeding farm is insufficient and the living conditions are minimal, just enough to keep them alive long enough to be sold.

Selection in rat breeding

To meet the challenge of changing people’s mentality in the face of pet rats or fancy rats, I thought about what I needed to do in order to give these little angels the best chance to come and touch the heart of their human, or their adopter.

The first tip that jumped out at me is the aesthetic appearance of the rat. This first point represents the hook that makes anyone who is sensitive to the beauty of an animal fall in love. It may seem superficial to approach it like this, but that’s what always happens to humans. It has been proven that human babies who are beautiful attract more tenderness and interest than babies who have ordinary features. It’s a shame but that’s how it is. A rat that possesses beauty by its bluish-gray color, commonly referred to as blue rats for example, or a physical feature such as large elephant ears (a Dumbo rat in reference to  Dumbo ‘s large ears the elephant who is the main character of the Disney children’s film), is more likely to be adopted than a red-eyed albino rat with standard ears.

Based on this observation, I therefore set myself the objective of breeding rats that meet beauty criteria that I consider important enough to weigh in the balance, this balance that will lean in the direction of adoption of two rats per adopter. Here, I insist on the number of two rats because never a rat should be adopted alone. I encourage anyone interested in adopting a rat as a pet to adopt a minimum of three rats or if not, at least two rats since rats are gregarious animals, in other words, they live in groups. The more individuals they are together, the happier they are.

The second point which seems essential to me for a person to fall under the spell of his 2 or 3 rats that he has just adopted within my rattery, is that it is imperative that his rats have a good character. and good health. A good character in the rat implies that he is automatically inclined to want to establish a good relationship with his human, he even feels the need for it. If the rat is looking for a relationship with the human, it is a safe bet that the new adopter will respond favorably to this search for a new relationship that is based on good healthy foundations, which necessarily implies good health. also in rats. Raising rats therefore means always keeping in mind that it is necessary to stimulate the pups from an early age in order to make them adopt a healthy behavior towards humans and to give them the best living conditions so that rats can have a healthy mind in a healthy body. When the reproduction of the domestic rat  is carried out in a serious way by a rat breeder and that it succeeds through a selection process in bringing together these three winning conditions within its lines of rats, that is to say:

  1. healthy behavior
  2. A healthy mind
  3. A healthy body

the rat can only turn out to be the ideal pet for humans, if of course the latter needs unconditional love from an affectionate, faithful and sociable living being.
